Goals Running

Training Intentions for 2019

Training Intentions for 2019

In 2018, I had one big time goal that dictated my smaller goals. A sub-1:35 half marathon was within my abilities if I trained hard, and so I did. I ran a sub-1:35 half in May 2018;   Then, in the second half of 2018, I ran less. We moved cross-country from the Seattle area to Northwest Indiana. I broke my third metatarsal. In December, I started virtually from scratch with short run-walk intervals.  I learned (and relearned) valuable lessons about my training and how ... continue reading...

Running Training Tips

Returning to Running After Injury

Returning to Running After Injury

A prudent runner prioritizes injury prevention as much as the runs themselves. She strengthens her core and hips to minimize biomechanical weakness, wears appropriate footwear to absorb shock, foam rolls, and takes rest days and cutback weeks. But I’ve seen it in myself, runners I coach, and friends I know: you can do everything within your power to prevent injury, but injury occurs nonetheless. Running is a high-impact sport. It wears and tears on our bodies, even as it makes our bones ... continue reading...

Mile Markers: Reloading

Mile Markers: Reloading

Returning from any sort of bone injury requires a careful reloading process. Even though everything feels well physically, I'm gradually increasing the training load for the next few weeks. I have read it can take up to 90 days for a fracture to fully heal, and therefore I am erring on the side of caution.  While 2018 saw some big PRs in the half marathon and 5K, I also endured more training breaks than I would like. I built back up after laparoscopic surgery, I dealt with recurring ... continue reading...

Mile Markers: Christmas Week Runs

Mile Markers: Christmas Week Runs

Last week I probably ate a higher number of Christmas cookies than miles I ran. I still ran and it was glorious, but since I am reloading my foot after injury, I'm not running too much. I'm gradually rebuilding and relishing one run at a time - even run-walk intervals for 35 minutes are wonderful after eight weeks off.  I am using run-walk intervals to return to running. My ortho instructed me to start with short intervals and then build up from there with one day between runs for the ... continue reading...

Holiday Gift Guide for Runners (Just Run)

In anticipation of Christmas, this month’s Just Run round-up features our holiday gift lists for the runner in your life. I love being able to use a gift the moment I receive it. This is especially true with any running related gifts. That sentiment inspired this year’s holiday gift guide, which features gifts that the runner in your life can use immediately - gear and clothing for the coldest, snowiest months of the year. These gifts are perfect for the runner in your life who loves snow, ... continue reading...

Mile Markers: Closing Time

Mile Markers: Closing Time

Last week moved into our first house! Our original intention wasn't to purchase so soon after moving back to Indiana, but it worked out so well because we love our house. It's a beautiful house in a location we dreamed of living in back years ago when we first lived in Indiana. As newlyweds, we used to drive through this neighborhood, oohing and ahhing and dreaming. The house is along the local network of running trails and close to a park for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.  Even ... continue reading...
