2017 Holiday Gift Guide for Runners

2017 Holiday Gift Guide for Runners

My Christmas list this year, like most years, is filled with running-related gifts. Chances are, your wish list is similar – or you are looking for gifts to buy the runner in your life. This 2017 holiday gift guide for runners features what I would give to the runners in my life – products that I personally use and trust.

2017 Holiday Gift Guide for Runners

AfterShokz Trekz Titanium Wireless Headphones

This past year, I started listening to audiobooks on my easy-paced long runs – but I hated having to use my basic iPhone earbuds. I am a firm believer in being aware of one’s surroundings on a run and these Aftershokz headphones offer both awareness and crystal clear audio – so I can listen to my Audible while also not getting run over by a cyclist. I can even focus on my own breathing, rather than having it canceled out from the headphones as I’ve experienced with earbuds.

AfterShokz uses bone conduction to transmit sound, allowing these headphones to have an open ear style so you can hear your surroundings (and not ruin your hearing). They are comfortable and stay in place during a run, walk, or strength training session. The AfterShokz Trekz Titanium also features a noise-canceling microphone for phone calls, easy-to-use buttons for pausing and adjusting the volume during the run, and smooth connectivity to your phone’s Bluetooth.

The AfterShokz Trekz Titanium comes in two sizes and can be purchased on their website or on Amazon.

Run Coaching

Give your runner the gift of training next year! From custom-made plans to one-on-one options, I offer a wide variety of coaching options based on your budget and needs. This year, my runners have qualified for Boston, ran huge PRs in a variety of distances, come back from time off due to injury and surgery, and achieved many goals – and that could be you too.

Knuckle Lights Advanced

These rechargeable and bright handheld lights will light your path and keep you visible to cars on your early morning runs. The rechargeable ones feature more lumens than the original Knuckle Lights and They come with a dock to keep them charged between runs, meaning you never have to worry about a battery dying mid-run.

You can purchase Knuckle Lights Advance on their website or on Amazon.

Rep Fitness Kettlebell

A gym membership is expensive – and time spent driving the gym can be better spent running. Rep Fitness provides high-quality and reasonably priced equipment for your at-home – including these single-cast gravity casted kettlebells. For any runner looking to prioritize strength training, kettlebells offer an efficient and effective workout – and take up only a small corner for storage.

StrideBox

Give the gift that keeps on giving! StrideBox is a monthly subscription box of running-related samples – sports nutrition products, running gear, snacks, skincare, and more.

You can purchase StrideBox on their website for $19.95+. Use the code ThisRunnersRecipes10 for 10% off a 3-month or 6-month subscription (code expires 12/14/2017).

Pilatesology Subscription

Pilates provides a fantastic workout for runners, as it improves core strength, hip mobility, posture, and more. The downside of Pilates is that studio classes are expensive – but Pilatesology solves that buy offering over 1000 video classes from dozens of teachers, ranging from 5-minute tutorials to hour-long workouts. Since you digitally stream the videos, you can do them from home, a hotel room, or wherever you have a mat. I have done Pilates for 12 years now and these videos are the best that I have ever tried, especially in terms of clear instruction and workout quality.

You can purchase the monthly or yearly subscription on Pilatesology’s website for $19/month or $149/year.

Garmin 230/235

This watch does everything but actually run for you: it tracks your daily steps and sleep, accurately records the time, distance, pace, cadence, and more on your runs, utilizes Garmin LiveTrack for safety, and syncs seamlessly with your phone’s Bluetooth. The watch itself has a simple yet pleasing aesthetic, meaning you can wear it as an activity tracker when you’re not running without the conspicuous look of a sports watch. The watch features modes for running, indoor running, swimming, cycling, and more and is waterproof up to 50 meters.

You can purchase Garmin 230/235 on Amazon or the Garmin website.

Athleta Speed Light Tank/Tee

Athleta has quickly become one of my favorite brands of clothing. Why? They eschew the pink-it-and-shrink-it mentality of outdoor gear with high-performance running, hiking, and yoga clothes and are moving toward fair trade certified and sustainably sourced clothing. The Speed Light tank (also available in short sleeve and long sleeve tee) is flattering and comfortable. It wicks away sweat and performs well on everything from short and fast repeats to 20 mile runs. The rubber grip material keeps the shirt in place weather you are doing hill repeats or Pilates.

You can purchase the top on Athleta’s website.

(Athleta tops can run large, so consider sizing down.)

Saucony Uti-Mitt

For the always-cold runner, a good pair of mittens are an essential piece of gear. Saucony’s mittens keep the fingers warm on the chillest of runs with a wind and water resistant DWR coating. The clever features such as a soft fleece outer for wiping runny noses, magnetic clips to hold the mittens together, and a long cuff make these mittens a winter must-have.

You can purchase these on Saucony’s website or on Amazon.

  1. I definitely think Im gonna ask for the knuckle lights this year and Im also interested in the Athlete tank! Glad to hear you like the Aftershokz headphones. Im still undecided about those but really considering giving them a try!

  2. I’ve heard so much about these headphones that I may just have to try them. I have to say that I actually LIKE my Beats in my ears and I just keep the volume low but, I’ve seen so many endorsements from runners that I feel like I have to at least test them out!
I’m also intrigued by the Pilates subscription. That would be great for me!
Lastly, Athleta is THE BEST. I have been wearing their clothing since they opened and still sold other brands like Adidas and Nike through their catalog. Now that is a LONG time 🙂
Have a great Thanksgiving my friend!

    1. I really, really like the headphones – they are so comfortable and the audio quality is outstanding! But if you get anything, definitely get the Pilates subscription! They have a free trial with limited videos and some free videos on their website if you want to check them out.

  3. The Gear Well fuel pouch looks interesting! I hate all the stickiness of regular gels….even if I grab an extra cup of water to splash over my hands (in a race), I’m still a sticky mess.

  4. Hi Laura:

Thanks for the Garmin watch tip. Question…how long does the battery last? I need something I can listen to music too for a full marathon. My Apple watch only holds battery for the 1/2 marathon as I listen to music and have workout app running.

Also what do you charge for coaching?

Bought the gel pouch as trying to figure fuel thing out as I train for my first full marathon!! Going to check out the headsets too…Thanks again for these tips..

    Happy Holidays 2019…

    1. Hi Lisa! The battery usually lasts 8 or so hours on the Garmin – although I do believe newer ones last even longer.
I charge between $50-105/month for coaching, depending on what level. If you have any more questions, please email me at [email protected] – I would love to work with you!
